DepEd initiates K to 12
Starting this school year, the Department of Education (DepEd) will implement the first phase of the Aquino administration’s K-to-12 basic education program.
DepEd has revised the curriculum for the school year 2012-2013. This new curriculum will be first applied to the incoming first year students. From the original 10 year basic education for students, now to 12 years. Two years have been added to secondary basic education or high school. This was applied to improve the quality of education in the Philippines. This is just one solution to Philippines’ problem in education.
The phased implementation of K-to-12 program was started last school year, 2011-2012, wherein they offered the Universal Kindergarten Program, which obligates all children to finish kindergarten before entering Grade 1. The full implementation which adds two years to basic secondary education is expected in the school year 2016-2017.
Under the said program, the traditional 10 years of basic education will be extended to 12 years, 6 years of elementary, 4 years of junior high school, and 2 years of senior high school. The first year students will be called Grade 7, the second years will be Grade 8 and so on. This new curriculum is expected to improve the students’ learning capabilities.
The students may choose their own course for the additional 2 years. The students can also work after they have finished senior high school.
One part of the new curriculum is the mother tongue-based teaching wherein the students from Grade 1 to 3 will be taught using their native language. The Department of Education tries to produce the materials needed for all of the projects under the K-to-12 program.
